WelcomeThe Old Bakery on 8th Gallery and Café are both housed in an old bakery building, circa 1903, which is a feature of the Maylands historic Eighth Avenue precinct. The Gallery and Café combine to offer an attractive destination, easily reached by train, bus or car, just minutes from the Perth CBD. The Old Bakery's motto is: 'Fine Art, Fine Food, Fine Coffee'. The GallerySince opening in 1996 the gallery has established a reputation for sourcing an outstanding collection of Western Australian fine art and craft under the direction of partners Anne Butorac, Rosemary Cant and Kath Lymon. Don't miss the Phoenix Collection! On show in the Gallery until Feb 12th is the delightful Phoenix Collection which emerged after the Kelmscott bushfire 'devoured' Charlene O'Brien's home on 6th February 2011. Charlene was fortunate in that her studio remained and so she has been able to continue her work with fashion design. She has even used rust and ashes left by the fires to dye some of her light silk fabrics before creating the contemporary and unique garments in this collection. Charlene will be giving an artist talk on Sunday afternoon 5th February at 3.00 pm. We hope you can be there. About Charlene O'Brien: After graduating at the London College of Fashion in the mid 80's, Charlene O'Brien established her own fashion label ECO LOGIKA®. Charlene is recognised internationally as an eco textile designer who combines raw organic fibres, hand spun silks, recycled remnant, organic Australian merino wool and luxurious sustainable silks, fused with various constructive and embellished techniques to create stunningly elegant, ultra feminine garments by hand and machine. Her enticing colour palette of neutral antique hues, hand dyed in natural botanicals, is highlighted by vibrant appliqué and beadwork using glass, shell and semi-precious stone. Her style is organic ethereal feminine capturing a romantic edge in dresses, tops, shorts, specialising in eco wedding wear. The CafeThe adjoining cafe, established in 2006, has become a popular destination with its delicious food and beautiful rear garden. The gallery and cafe are integrated with hanging space in the Cafe and cafe seating in the Gallery. The Woodfired BakerThe original bakery and oven have been brought into production again as a wood-fired, traditional bakery by 'The Woodfired Baker'. It has a theatre-style kitchen that can be viewed through a window from the gallery enabling you to watch bread being moulded by hand as it was in the 1900s. The bread is being used by the cafe which also sells the bread each day.
